Dwelling on Holiness
There’s always a sweetness in turning older and starting something new. I love to take time especially around my birthday and make a note of what God did in my life in the last year. I can’t count the things he taught me and ways he spoke to me, but here are a few things I want to share!!
The word that invaded my heart this year was HOLY. So many verses popped up about God’s holiness. He is eternal, perfect, righteous, mighty, no one is like him. Along with that, the Holy Spirit challenged me: what does it mean to be called to holiness and live a life that is set apart, consecrated to the Lord?
I went on a journey of studying the gospels, and it’s so cool because you see story after story of people who have encounters with Jesus and when they see him for who he really is, they fall at his feet and worship him. Seeking healing, anointing him with perfume, filled with awe and fear. That’s the only proper response, to bow before him in reverence and proclaim “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
God’s been teaching me that worship starts with those three words. Dwelling on God‘s holiness started to shift some things in me. I started to experience the Holy Spirit in fresh ways, becoming more aware of his power and presence. God taught me the spiritual discipline of praise. What would happen if I started each day with the recognition that God is holy and praise him for it? So that regardless of what happens to me the rest of the day, nothing can change who deserves my worship. I love Psalm 92:2: “At each and every sunrise we will be thanking you for your kindness and your love. As the sun sets and all through the night, we will keep proclaiming, ‘You are so faithful!’”
Worship isn’t about me or you, it’s about God. It’s not about what I can do for God or even about what God can do for me, though he is so gracious towards us and does great things. It’s about who he is— his character— and worship is how we respond. Which is really good news for us, because it means that if we don’t feel like singing, if we’re tired, even if life doesn’t look how we want it to— God is the same. He is holy. He is forever worthy of our worship.
