Taste and See
Over the last six months, I’ve been in disbelief at the grace of our Creator God. I’ve seen such beautiful places, traveling up the coast of California and camping at Big Sur. It’s not just that he could make all of this with a single sentence, but marveling at the grace he extends to us to be in relationship with him. He invites us to taste and see his goodness, to partake in who he is— with our spirits, our minds, AND our bodies. To immerse ourselves in his glory with our physical senses. It’s visceral. It requires all of us.
In Psalm 34, David uses really specific language to describe relationship with God. He says I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. I sought the Lord; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. The lions grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Come, children, listen; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Whoever loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from lies. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous; his ears are attentive to their cry. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers them. He protects all their bones; not one of them will be broken.
Lips, taste, look, faces, weak, hungry, listen, tongue, eyes, ears, cry, bones. Your body matters in your relationship with God.
Fears, shame, seek, lack, loves, desires, brokenhearted, crushed, troubles. Your spirit— meaning everything that is invisible that makes you who you are— matters in your relationship with God.
God’s constantly inviting us into his grace, through the miracles of every day life. A delicious meal is an invitation to be in relationship with Creator God. So is a stunning sunset. The sound of waves. Fear is an invitation. God wants to deliver you and make your face radiant in his freedom. A broken heart is an invitation. He wants to take the crushed pieces of your spirit and mend you with his love.
My prayer for you today is that you would accept this divine invitation to taste and see God’s goodness, that you would worship him with the entirety of your being.
